Slip-ons have been our go-to footwear, not only because it is too comfy but because it makes us feel so at home. Most of the time we’re so eager to turn on our slip-ons since we’re running all over the place at work with not-so-comfortable shoes. Even my dearest granny loves it, she always tells me that it is so soft on the feet and ankles. She always tells me, “I feel like there’s a lot of needles pinching my foot even when I’m just walking. It really hurts and I need something soft and cushiony to protect my feet. My slip-ons are everything to me, they’re like my best friend now”. Those words etched into my heart and have changed my perspective so much.
As an Occupational Therapist, nothing will mean more to me than giving a better life to my patients. How much more if you’re caring for those who are so close to your heart and mean the world to you. From then on, I promised myself that I would do everything in my power to help her out. As time passed by, I started to notice most of the elderly I know wearing slip-ons even if it’s so cold. I realized that they would bear the burden of a freezing temperature rather than to deal with the pain of uncomfy footwear.
What does Science say? According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, one in three people over the age of 65 sustains a fall yearly. They said that every 14 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Also, every 29 minutes an older adult dies from a fall-related injury.
Regarding the financial impact of falls on the patients, as the general population ages, so too will the financial impact of falls on our society. In the past few years, fall-related medical costs totaled $23 million (CDC). With the Coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc on our healthcare system, we can’t afford these horrendous statistics. How can we if we should prioritize what’s more pressing? It’s also the reason why we keep on reminding everyone to stay safe and to stay out of the hospital, hence the reason for the campaign. “Proper footwear can help improve balance, especially in older people who may struggle with mobility and balance issues,” said Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).
How can we not heed the advice of healthcare professionals? It’s simply the reason why reducing or eliminating falls is important to prevent injury. Almost all of my patients struggle mentally in the wake of the accident. They usually vividly recall in their head what happened. You need to be patient to help them out. One way you can do that is to do the best thing you can to help them. Say, for example, give them the tools they need to easily recover. One of those is the all-time reliable comfortable footwear. Most of the time, they ask for slip-ons. It’s hard not to give them what they want but giving them that makes them more prone to trips, slips, and even falls.
